# Expansion and alignment

When a recommendation names more than one step, start with what each step is meant to change\. That makes the explanation easier to follow than reading a list of appliances on its own\.

### Two intended changes

A palatal expander aims to widen the upper jaw; alignment arranges teeth\.

Read the goal as the reason for the proposed step, and the appliance name as the tool being discussed\. An explanation that names both is more useful than a device label by itself: it connects what is proposed with what the team intends it to do\.

### Read two lines together

The filled fictional reading below supplies two goal statements\. The first connects a named appliance to its purpose; the later line introduces another purpose\. Read both lines as parts of one explanation\.

The second line does not replace the first\. Nor does it say that the first step has already accomplished everything mentioned later\. Reading the two purposes separately helps you follow the explanation without turning them into competing descriptions of the same job\.

Fictional reading: connect each line to its purpose

| Part of the explanation | Stated purpose | Read the connection |
| --- | --- | --- |
| First line | Widen the upper jaw | The note connects this purpose to the named appliance\. |
| Later line | Arrange teeth | The note identifies another purpose for a later conversation\. |

The note and its wording are invented for this reading exercise\. They are not a recommendation for your child\.

### Keep the goal with the appliance name

Suppose one conversation uses an appliance name while a written summary describes a goal\. Keep the two statements together when reading the plan\. The name answers what was discussed; the goal explains the purpose assigned to it\. Neither statement should be discarded simply because the other uses different words\.

The same habit helps when a document mentions braces or trays later\. Look at the purpose the team has actually stated for that part of the explanation\. A later appliance name is not, by itself, a correction of an earlier goal\.

The next lesson separates another kind of information: the words used to describe an appliance\. The complete worked plan then puts the goal, description and individual directions in one place\.
