## Does SMILE\-FX list braces for children?

Yes\. The clinic's braces page includes children's treatment\. This guide prepares parent questions for an assessment at the Miramar studio\. It does not imply that every child needs treatment, set an age cutoff or establish a particular observation or treatment program\.

## A closer look at children's braces questions\.

General explanations from primary orthodontic sources\. Your clinician explains how they apply to an individual proposal\.

### A check\-up is an assessment, not a start date

The AAO recommends an initial orthodontic check\-up no later than age seven\. Its children's guide explains that a mix of baby and permanent teeth can provide information about development\. This is an assessment recommendation, not a statement that braces should begin at that age or that every child needs treatment\.

### Observation and treatment are different next steps

An early check\-up does not automatically lead to an appliance\. The AAO distinguishes assessment from immediate treatment\. Record the findings and proposed next step separately; a general explanation does not establish a particular SMILE\-FX observation program\.

### Does a check\-up by age seven mean braces start at seven?

No\. The AAO recommends an orthodontic check\-up by age seven because a mixture of baby and permanent teeth can give the clinician useful developmental information\. Its separate patient guidance explains that a check\-up does not automatically mean an appliance is needed or treatment is about to begin\.

Keep the assessment, its findings and the proposed next step separate\. A check\-up is the opportunity to establish what is happening; the finding is the clinician's explanation; the next step follows from that individual assessment\. An age recommendation cannot fill in those answers for a child\.

Three different parts of the conversation

| Part | Meaning | What to record |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Assessment | The clinician evaluates the child | What was assessed |
| Finding | The clinician explains what was found | The explanation in the team's words |
| Next step | The clinician explains the recommendation | What happens next and why |

No automatic start age, symptom score or particular SMILE\-FX monitoring program is asserted\.

### Distinguish a finding from the proposed next step

Observation and appliance placement are different possibilities after an assessment\. The AAO explains that some children are observed, some may need treatment later and some may have an earlier recommendation\. The reason for an individual next step must come from the clinician, not from completing this page\.

For example, imagine a fictional appointment note that says only 'review discussed'\. That phrase does not reveal what was found, why a review was proposed or whether it refers to explaining findings or a later observation visit\. The useful follow\-up is to request those separate details, rather than assume the note means an appliance will start\. The blank record below leaves all actual clinical answers to the team\.

Fictional blank parent record, to complete on paper with the team

| Finding | Explanation | Proposed next step | Follow\-up to confirm |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Not supplied in this example | Why the finding matters: \_\_\_\_\_\_ | Recommendation and reason: \_\_\_\_\_\_ | Actual arrangement: \_\_\_\_\_\_ |

Blank fields are not a diagnosis, treatment recommendation or a promise that monitoring is the appropriate next step\.

### What can a parent ask about a child's treatment estimate?

An assessment question is 'What did you find?' A treatment\-scope question is 'What is proposed and why?' A payment question is 'What services and terms does this written estimate cover?' An age such as nine does not answer any of those questions or establish a fee\.

If treatment is proposed, request the actual scope, any separate services and the complete payment terms in writing\. Ask the clinic and insurer to explain plan\-specific benefits rather than assuming children's treatment is free or covered\. This guide does not decide whether a child needs braces or qualifies for a particular product\.

This separates conversation topics; it supplies no age\-specific price or coverage promise\.

A parent\-focused starting point

## Ask what is being assessed, and why\.

SMILE\-FX lists braces services for children\. A child's individual assessment determines what should be discussed next\. This page does not set an age cutoff or imply that every child needs treatment\.

01

### Understand the findings

Ask the clinician to explain what they are assessing and what the findings mean for the next conversation\. Avoid treating a website checklist as an assessment of your child\.

02

### Clarify the proposed next step

Ask whether the clinician is proposing treatment, observation or another next step, and why\. This guide does not establish a monitoring program or a treatment phase for any child\.

03

### Help your child ask questions

Ask how the team would explain a visit or proposed plan to your child\. Confirm with the clinic who should attend and which information it wants beforehand\.

Make the parent conversation specific

## Your child's first\-assessment agenda

Select questions to bring to the assessment\. No age, symptoms, photographs or information about your child is entered or evaluated\.

What would you like the clinician to explain?

**Purpose of the assessment** What are you assessing at this visit, and how will you explain the findings to us?

**Whether treatment is proposed** Are you proposing treatment, observation or another next step, and what is the reason?

**Information to bring** What information do you need from our family or our child's usual dental provider?

**Explaining the visit to a child** How can we discuss the visit and any proposed next step with our child?

**Parent or guardian attendance** Who should attend, and which consent or administrative details should we confirm?

**Costs of a proposed plan** If a plan is proposed, can you explain its written scope, costs and any follow\-up charges?

**Questions after the assessment** Whom should we contact if we need more explanation after the visit?

Your conversation, organized

### Does this page say my child needs braces?

No\. It prepares questions for an assessment\. It does not evaluate your child or imply that every child needs braces\.

### Does it provide an age when treatment should start?

The AAO recommends a first orthodontic check\-up no later than age seven, as explained in the children's guide linked above\. A check\-up is an assessment, not an automatic treatment start\. The clinician explains an individual child's next step\.

### Can it identify a bite or developmental issue?

No\. There is no symptom questionnaire, photograph assessment or diagnostic result\. Discuss concerns directly with the clinical team\.

### Can I ask about observation rather than treatment?

Yes, you can ask what next step the clinician is proposing and why\. The question does not establish that the clinic offers a particular observation program\.
