Keep orthodontic care and ordinary dental care distinct

Orthodontic appointments do not replace dental examinations and cleanings. Both concern a child's teeth, but they have different purposes. Knowing that distinction helps a family understand each provider's explanation and directions.

Two care roles can concern the same child's teeth

The orthodontic focus includes alignment, tooth movement and bite relationships. General dental care includes examinations, cleaning and the health of teeth and gums. Attending an orthodontic appointment does not establish that a dental examination or cleaning has also occurred.

A visit about tooth movement or an appliance's progress answers a different question from an examination for cavities or gum health. Being seen regularly for orthodontics therefore does not make ordinary dental care redundant. The providers' actual directions determine the child's arrangements.

No examination or cleaning interval is prescribed by this guide.

Braces add parts; dental health still needs attention

Brackets and wires add places where plaque can collect. Moving teeth and caring for teeth and gums are therefore connected concerns, but they are not the same task. An appliance progressing through a plan is not evidence that teeth and gums have had their separate dental examination or cleaning.

A family's care information should match the appliance actually supplied and the directions given by the relevant provider. A description of fixed braces explains their design; it does not supply a child's cleaning method, products or appointment interval.

Keep the appliance-specific directions actually supplied for your child.

Keep the actual care directions and contact route together

Keep the directions supplied by each provider with the care they concern and the relevant contact route. The orthodontic plan explains the proposed approach; the actual dental-care directions remain identifiable alongside it. The Miramar visit page brings the clinic's contact options together.
